Former Texas A&M forward signs massive extension with Trailblazers

Texas A&M's former All-SEC forward is signing a massive extension to return to the Portland Trail Blazers through the 2028-29 season, according to reports from an NBA insider.

Shams Charania broke the news on Tuesday that Aggie legend Robert Williams III is inking a three-year, $44 million extension with the Trail Blazers. Williams played for Texas A&M for two seasons before being selected by the Boston Celtics with the 27th pick in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft. Most projections had Williams slotted as a potential lottery pick, but he slipped to the Celtics late in the first round of his draft class.

Per CBS Sports, the 6-foot-10, 237-pounder from Oil City, Louisiana, would have had a big market through free agency if Portland didn't lock him down with the huge extension. He will reportedly serve as a backup center behind Donovan Clingan in 2026-27. Last season, Williams averaged 6.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.5 blocks in 17.1 minutes per contest for the Trailblazers.

Williams is a two-time SEC Defensive Player of the Year and is synonymous with his elite rebounding, blocking and ability to attack the glass. After being selected by the Celtics in the 2018 NBA Draft, Williams earned the nickname "Time Lord" for oversleeping and missing his introductory press conference with the media, while also missing his flight to Boston entirely. The moniker was created by various Celtics fans' social media accounts and Williams fully embraced it.

He has lived up to the hype and the "Time Lord" nickname with his outstanding performances on the court. The Texas A&M big man now has a big contract with Portland, as he continues to dominate in the NBA, representing the Aggies.
