Springbok fans cash in: Ellis Park ticket prices SLASHED
· The South African

Ticket prices to the Springboks clash against England this weekend have significantly dropped – and many rugby fans believe it’s due to public pressure placed on SA Rugby.

The price cuts came weeks after the Boks played a friendly against the Barbarians at a nearly empty Nelson Mandela Stadium in Gqeberha.
South Africa will play their first test match of the year on Saturday, 4 July.
SPRINGBOKS FANS CELEBRATE DISCOUNTED TICKET PRICES
At the start of this week, screenshots of a seating chart of Ellis Park’s tickets to the Springboks vs England test match went viral on social media.
Many rugby fans blamed SA Rugby’s “greedy” ticket pricing, which has been criticised as unaffordable for ordinary South Africans.
With mounting pressure from a lack of sales, public criticism, and the fear of another empty venue, SA Rugby appeared to fold and significantly reduce ticket prices.
Tickets have dropped from between R1 750- R3 000 to many priced at R450 and R650.
Social media users have taken advantage of the plummeting prices and have bragged about bagging tickets.
@TheBenjMark: “Can’t believe we bullied @Springboks and SA Rugby to drop the ticket prices. See you at Ellis Park on Saturday”
@mcaslind: “Just paid R450 for my Ellis Park tickets. Satisfied”
@JPdebeer1981: “That’s a huge jump. Whoever had a hand in this… well done!”

NO REFUNDS FOR FULL PRICE TICKETS
Meanwhile, some Springbok fans who bought full-priced tickets were less than impressed…
X user @worldchamps19 tweeted: “We got ours for R2500, now people in the same block bought theirs for R650. How is that fair? We need a reimbursement”
Another – @RudiIsaacs – requested a refund after the price drop.
TicketMaster – the official licensed ticket sales and distribution company – responded with the following statement:
“Price concerns: Prices are set and adjusted by the event organiser.
“Refunds: Once purchased, tickets cannot be refunded, partially refunded, credited, or price-adjusted if later sold at a lower price.
“While this may not be the outcome you hoped for, the organiser hopes you will still enjoy attending the Springboks match”

WHY ELLIS PARK IS A HARD SELL
Despite Ellis Park being an iconic venue and landmark, rugby fans have voiced concerns about attending matches there.
The 65 000-seater stadium is located in Doornfontein, which many believe poses safety risks due to crime, particularly theft and carjacking.
Others have shared challenges like
- Congestion in the surrounding precinct when entering and exiting
- Ageing and outdated facilities
- Lack of entertainment options
