We knew an offer sheet was coming, but maybe not one this big.

The Philadelphia Flyers have tendered an offer sheet to the Anaheim Ducks for center Leo Carlsson. Agreed to by Carlsson, the deal is for 5 years, worth $90 million, or an AAV of $18 million.

Carlsson, 21, is coming off his third NHL season. In 2025-26, he scored 29 goals and 67 total points in 70 games. He was the Ducks’ 2nd overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

With offer sheets, the Ducks have 7 days to decide whether or not they will match the contract offered to their young star center by the Flyers. No matter what happens, Carlsson will become the league’s highest-paid player annually with an $18 million AAV.

Carlsson has played 201 NHL games in his young career. In total, he has 61 goals and 141 total points as a 21-year-old in the league. The young Swede is everything the Flyers have been looking for in a 1C. He is a two-way center with a high-end hockey IQ. Carlsson is an elite playmaker with a good finishing touch and is a great skater.

The Flyers have been looking for a 1C for a while now. This is certainly one way to try.

Now, the decision is in the Ducks’ hands. As mentioned earlier, they have to choose to match, or let Carlsson walk to the Flyers. If they do decide to let him go, the Flyers will owe the Ducks their first-round picks in the next 4 drafts.

Ducks GM Pat Verbeek has said he will match any offer that comes in for Carlsson. However, I am not so sure he was expecting this type of deal. Danny Briere called Verbeek’s bluff; now we will wait and see what happens.

Mayhem.
