Nets trade for Timberwolves' Julius Randle may be finalized on July 9

The Brooklyn Nets made one of the bigger moves that happened this offseason when they reportedly traded for Minnesota Timberwolves forward Julius Randle to improve the roster for next season. Brooklyn was also able to get the No. 28 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, which later became Iowa State forward Joshua Jefferson, from Minnesota in the trade and soon, the deal should be official.

"The Brooklyn-Chicago-Minnesota-Charlotte four-teamer can't become official for three more days due to the inclusion of Mouhamadou Gueye," NBA salary cap analyst Yossi Gozlan wrote on X earlier this week. What Gozlan was referring to was the fact that the trade can't be official due to forward Mouhamadou Gueye being added to the deal, but he can't be officially traded until July 9.

"He signed his contract on April 9 and becomes trade-eligible starting July 9, the three-month anniversary of the signing," Gozlan continued on X, noting that this trade not being official is due to a timing issue more than anything else. Essentially, the Netsacquired Randle and the No. 28 pick from the Timberwolves, Minnesota received the No. 33 pick, and the Chicago Bulls received center Nic Claxton from Brooklyn.

As the offseason went on, the trade was expanded to be a four-team trade with the Charlotte Hornets sending guards LaMelo Ball and Josh Green to the Timberwolves in exchange for forward Naz Reid for one first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps, and three second-round picks. Given the amount of salary changing hands, many salary cap pundits believe the trade will have this four-team framework once it is official.

With all of that being said, the Nets should be able to officially say that Randle is a member of their team, along with Jefferson, on Thursday and Brooklyn's fanbase won't have to worry about anything else regarding the deal. Many around the NBA believe that the Nets made a good deal by accepting Randle as a salary dump along with using their second-round pick to move into the first round to get Jefferson. It's only a matter of time at this point.
