Drew Scharnowski Is A Wonderful Luxury For Duke
· Yahoo Sports
Duke is going to have a very deep team this year, not least of all in the frontcourt. We’ve talked about this a few times already, but this article focuses on Drew Scharnowski, and he’s worth a closer look.

Duke will have Pat Ngongba back (6-11/250), and also brings in Cameron Williams (6-11/200) and Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje (6-11/240).
Williams will need to fill out to reach his ultimate potential, and while Boumtje Boumtje made an immense impression in the FIBA U17 World Cup in Istanbul, defense isn’t really seen as his strong point yet.
That’s where Drew Scharnowski is likely to carve out a role. He has a bit of a baby face still, but he looks really strong. When you get a guy like Virginia’s Thijs De Ridder or perhaps Johann Grunloh, guys who can throw their weight around, Scharnowski will find his niche.
Just looking at him, you get the sense that he can establish a position and hold it. He’s really powerful, and from the cheap seats, it looks like he has a low center of gravity.
When Greg Newton was at Duke, it seemed like his center of gravity was roughly between his chest and belly button.
On the other hand, Jason Williams had a center gravity that was much lower, and it allowed him to move in ways that most people can’t. Toss in strength, which Scharnowski has, and it’s a huge advantage.
He’s going to be a complementary player, a role guy, at least this year, but what a luxury it is to have a guy like that to throw in when you need his skillset.
Offensively, he shot 68.1%, but just 20% on threes and an unflattering 43.6% from the line. However, as a freshman, he hit 57.%, so he’s not hopeless. Still, that may keep him off the floor in tight games.
