Rangers have confirmed Scotland international Kirsty Smith has returned to home soil, signing a two-year deal ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The experienced defender returns to Scotland after spending the last eight years playing in England. Smith joins Rangers following the expiry of her contract at Nottingham Forest, where she spent the 2025/26 campaign, having previously represented both Manchester United and West Ham.

The move sees Smith return to Scottish football for the first time since leaving Hibernian in 2018. Since then, she has established herself as one of Scotland’s most experienced defenders, both at club level and on the international stage.

Before making the move south, Smith came through the ranks at Hibs, where she enjoyed a successful spell that included several domestic trophies and Champions League experience. During her eight years in England, Smith featured across both the Women’s Super League and the Women’s Championship.

Alongside her club career, Smith has earned more than 60 senior international caps, making her one of the most experienced players in the Scotland squad.

Now, she joins Rangers with a wealth of experience as Leanne Crichton continues to strengthen her squad ahead of the new campaign.

Speaking after completing the move, Smith said she was excited to be returning home and beginning a new chapter with Rangers.

“It’s nice to be home. I’ve spent eight years down in England and really enjoyed it, but Rangers is such a massive club. As soon as I heard there was interest, it was something I wanted to be part of.”

The defender also revealed Rangers’ ambitions were one of the biggest reasons behind her decision.

“You always want to be competing for trophies and that’s exactly what Rangers are aiming to do. I’m looking forward to getting started, meeting everyone and hopefully helping the team have a successful season.”

What Kirsty Smith will bring to Rangers

Smith joins Rangers with experience, leadership and versatility. Comfortable across the back line, the Scotland international can play in a number of defensive positions, giving Rangers extra depth ahead of a busy campaign.

Her experience of playing in England’s top divisions, combined with years on the international stage, will also provide valuable leadership within the squad.

Head coach Crichton welcomed the signing, highlighting Smith’s quality and the experience she will add as Rangers continue building a squad capable of challenging for domestic honours.

With Rangers looking to compete at the top end of the Scottish Women’s Premier League once again, Smith’s arrival could prove to be an important piece of business before the new season gets underway.
