Lotto winner support: What R8.1 million bought a Limpopo jackpot winner

· The South African

Lotto winner support looks nothing like it did in 2005, when Mahasha Eddie Ngoako, known as Bra Eddie, from Meidingen in the Greater Letaba Municipality, Limpopo, won his Lotto jackpot years before ITHUBA or Sizekhaya existed.

His story on the Mzansi Magic docuseries I Blew It still gets shared today. He did not lose the money quietly.

What Bra Eddie did with the Lotto winnings

Bra Eddie had just R13 left in his bank account after losing his job as a driver when he checked his numbers in March 2005 and matched all six. He won R7 million that month, and a further R1.1 million the following month on a Quick Pick, bringing his total to R8.1 million.

Where Lotto winner support could have helped

He spent generously on a family home and a church, and helped people around him, but his generosity also attracted people looking to take advantage. Those friendships disappeared once the money did, and today only his wife has stayed by his side.

Why Lotto winner support matters now

Bra Eddie’s win happened years before ITHUBA, the previous National Lottery operator, or Sizekhaya, the current operator, existed, so it isn’t clear whether he had access to structured financial advice at the time.

Today, both operators pair every payout above R50,000 with free financial advice and trauma counselling, so generosity does not have to come at the cost of financial security.

I think Bra Eddie’s story on the Mzansi Magic docuseries I Blew It still shows that even good intentions need structure behind them.
