WNBA Suspends Toronto Tempo Coach Sandy Brondello Over “Protected Species” Comment About Angel Reese

The Women’s National Basketball Association suspended Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello for one game without pay after she called Atlanta Dream superstar Angel Reese “a protected species” during the game.

The decision was made just hours after the head coach posted an apology, which led to her being sidelined for Toronto’s upcoming game against the Las Vegas Aces on Monday.

On Friday, during Toronto’s match against Atlanta, the incident happened. Brondello was yelling at the referees when they were reviewing the foul by Toronto’s Nyara Sabally on Atlanta’s offensive rebound.

During this time, Brondello was heard saying: “Angel, she’s a protected species!”

Atlanta won the game with a score of 111-92.

After the incident became viral on social media, Reese replied, “ARE WE SURPRISED?! @/SBrondello.”

Brondello posted an apology on X on Saturday. “Angel, I’m sorry,” she said, “Last night, in the emotion of the moment after Nyara’s injury, I used a phrase that I shouldn’t have used, and I take full responsibility for that.”

In conclusion, she added: “I understand that my words carried an impact beyond what I intended, particularly for Black women in our league, and I’m deeply sorry for that. I’ve spent my career competing with, coaching, and learning from incredible Black women. I regret that my words caused hurt to a community I respect so deeply. I have a lot of respect for you as both a player and a person.”
