Kirby Smart confirms Georgia RB Dante Dowdell is hospitalized with 'serious injuries' from ATV accident

Georgia running back Dante Dowdell is hospitalized with what head coach Kirby Smart described Tuesday as "serious injuries" due to an accident while riding an ATV.

Smart declined to reveal the nature of Dowdell's injuries while speaking at SEC media days in Tampa, Florida. Per ESPN, Smart said that Dowdell is receiving treatment at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a hospital that specializes in spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation.

"He's injured," Smart said, per ESPN. "We don't know when his return will be. I don't know the specifics of it, to be honest with you. It was a recreational vehicle, and he had some serious injuries."

Smart told reporters that Dowdell had been in two hospitals since the accident and that the program has cautious expectations that he’ll make a "full recovery."

"We expect a full recovery, but the outlook right now is we're waiting to see," Smart said, per On3. "We'll go day to day with him and see.

"So I hate that for him and his family, but he's a great kid. It's been tough. A lot of our players have been over there to see him. It's just one of those really tough situations."

Smart's comments confirm reports last week that Dowdell had been injured in an ATV accident. Per ESPN, the accident took place near his home in Picayune, Mississippi.

Dowdell, 21, is a rising senior. He transferred to Georgia this offseason after previously playing for Oregon, Nebraska and Kentucky.

Dowdell tallied 590 yards and three touchdowns from scrimmage in 12 games for Kentucky last season. As a sophomore, Dowdell posted 635 yards and 12 touchdowns from scrimmage in 12 games for Nebraska.

Dowdell was expected to play as a primary backup for Georgia starter Nate Frazier as part of a deep backfield that also features rising sophomore Chauncey Bowens and rising junior Dwight Phillips Jr., each of whom played in 12 games for the Bulldogs last season.

Georgia projects to start the upcoming season as a top 5 team and a top contender to compete for the national championship.
