Of course, nobody enjoys the disc renewal process.

Thankfully, vastly improved online services like government’s NATIS have at least eliminated the queues, annoying multi-coloured forms and wasted time.

Plus, most third-party services, like supermarkets and banking apps, piggyback off it, too.

Nevertheless, it does render 2026 vehicle licence renewal fees more like an annual tax, waiting for you once a year.

As such, you simply login, pay your money and receive your new disc via courier days later.

However, the amount you pay isn’t random. It’s set by the provincial authorities where you live. And it scales with your car’s tare weight …

And this next bit is important.

Here’s why you don’t want to delay paying your 2026 vehicle licence renewal fees.

Miss your renewal by more than 21 days and three things are added to your bill.

Firstly, you must still pay the full annual fee.

Plus, a pro-rata arrears for the unlicensed months, worked out as an annual fee times the number of months overdue. Plus, there’s a penalty of 10% of the annual fee per month overdue. Renew on time though, through NATIS, and none of that applies.

Finally, what jumps out to us is that Gauteng traffic authorities charge the highest for the most common tare bands.

Meanwhile, Gauteng’s schedule last saw an increase more than a year ago on 1 April 2025. And while it typically revises annually, it shows no signs of imminent update yet.

Alternatively, the Eastern Cape stays cheapest across most of the mid-weight ranges.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape were the last to be increased, effective from 1 July 2026. And Limpopo and Mpumalanga last updated their tariffs effective 1 April 2026.
