Former Michigan Wolverine expresses belief in Bob Chesney and UCLA

If everyone is in agreement about a hot take, is it no longer a hot take? Before the 2026 season starts, everyone seems to be buying in on UCLA Bruins football, meaning that a turnaround from their 3-9 season a year ago has become the expectation.

The Big Ten Conference media days began on Tuesday, while new head coach Bob Chesney and the UCLA players won’t meet with the media until Wednesday, UCLA football was still a topic of discussion.

Former Michigan tight end Jake Butt became the latest college football commentator to express belief in Chesney and the UCLA program.

“Maybe the best hire of the entire offseason. Watch out for UCLA to take a major step forward,” Butt said at the Big Ten Conference Media Day on Tuesday. “Another guy with winning expectations, winning standards and they’ve done some nice things in the portal too.”

Even if Chesney and the Bruins can post a winning record this year, the program still has a long way to go to compete with the best teams in the Big Ten, which includes the past three national champions in Michigan, Ohio State and Indiana.

While last year the Bruins had to face both Ohio State and Indiana, the conference schedule is a bit easier in 2026. UCLA will still face Michigan, USC and Oregon but besides those three, there are some winnable Big Ten games on the schedule for the Bruins.

UCLA still has a ton to prove but Chesney has plenty of believers throughout the college football world.
