Chargers' Justin Herbert reveals progress with footwork

The big news this offseason, aside from the addition of new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, was Justin Herbert's new stance.
It was the talk of minicamps and OTAs, and with training camp underway, many go to see it live in action.

After the Chargers' first training camp practice, Herbert said he has been working on the footwork during the summer break.
"You just get to the point where you’re not thinking about it," Herbert said.
"As opposed to months ago it was making sure your feet were lined up with the routes, timing.”
Herbert switched from his usual right foot forward in shotgun to placing his left foot slightly forward. The purpose of it was to give him an athletic split-second advantage. So far, it appears to work out.
On top of that, the split-second advantage is important with the type of offense McDaniel wants to run. McDaniel's offense will revolve around a quicker release for Herbert and reduce the pressure coming from the opposing team's pass rush.
McDaniel wants to mitigate the high hit counts from previous seasons by making faster decisions. The offensive line, especially in the interior, has been revamped. Still, the Chargers want to ensure they get the most out of McDaniel's offense.
The 43-year-old coordinator discussed the reason behind that tweak and how it benefits Herbert and the offense.
“You’re throwing a five-yard out route, how can we get twelve on that? Well, our timing based on our footwork and when we’re able to throw has a big portion in the overall maximization of that five-yard out route," McDaniel said.
The 28-year-old quarterback also mentioned that he loves the energy McDaniel brings to practice.
“He loves what he does. He loves football, he loves being here," Herbert said.
“It makes everyone want to work harder for him…We’re really fortunate to play for him.
“I could tell we were going to get along early on.”
Herbert and McDaniel have the makings to become an elite duo.
