Eagles’ Jonathan Greenard starts training camp on PUP list due to injury

The Philadelphia Eagles made a surprise addition to the physically unable to perform (PUP) list ahead of the first practice of training camp, as star edge rusher Jonathan Greenard is dealing with an injury.

The team announced on Wednesday that Greenard is dealing with a pectoral strain and he will begin training camp on the PUP list as a result.

The good news is, Greenard, who suffered the pec strain while lifting before training camp, is not expected to miss a lot of time.

“The Eagles are placing DE Jonathan Greenard on the PUP list with a pec strain suffered while lifting weights. He’s not expected to be out long,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo wrote.

Players added to the PUP list at the start of training camp can be activated at any time. If he is on the PUP list at final cuts, Greenard would be forced to miss the first four games of the season. Thankfully, it doesn’t look like his injury is that serious.

With the Eagles having a dire need at edge rusher during the offseason, Philly pulled off a big trade with the Minnesota Vikings to acquire the veteran edge rusher back in April in exchange for a pair of third-round picks.

The Eagles then turned around and extended Greenard with a four-year, $100 million deal that includes $50 million in guaranteed money. The contract runs through 2029.

“What you see is a relentless player with physical tools. He can win in multiple ways. He is hard to block,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said. “I know when we play Minnesota, we are worried about where he is at all times.”

“We just felt like we had a really good D-line, but we really wanted to elevate it to another level,” Roseman added.

A former third-round pick of the Houston Texans, Greenard certainly has the skills to do what Roseman is hoping for.

A former Pro Bowler, Greenard posted 24.5 sacks between 2023 and 2024, the latter of which was spent with the Minnesota Vikings. He earned his first Pro Bowl nod in 2024 when Greenard posted 12 sacks.

Last season was a rough one for Greenard, though, as he missed five games due to a shoulder injury en route to posting just three sacks in 12 contests.

The Eagles clearly believe Greenard will bounce back or else they wouldn’t have committed the resources they did.

However, his placement on the PUP list is an ominous start to his Eagles tenure following his injury-plagued 2025 campaign.
