Aliyah Boston’s night ended much earlier than expected Tuesday, but Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White offered an encouraging update after her team’s 105-95 victory over the Seattle Storm.

Boston exited during the second quarter after tripping over Storm rookie Flau’jae Johnson and crashing knee-first into the court at Climate Pledge Arena. The four-time WNBA All-Star immediately winced in pain and needed help getting back to her feet before heading to the locker room. The Fever initially listed Boston as questionable to return, but she remained on the sideline throughout the second half.

White later suggested that Indiana held Boston out as a precaution, rather than because the center had been definitively ruled incapable of returning.

“No update other than, you know, wasn’t really worth the risk for us in the second half,” White told reporters. “Just want to be very conservative and make sure that she’s good to go.”

Why Aliyah Boston did not return against Seattle

White’s comments should provide at least some relief for Fever fans. Although Boston never returned, Indiana’s decision appears to have been motivated by caution. The Fever controlled much of the game behind Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, who combined for 70 points, reducing the need to take any unnecessary chances with Boston.

Clark finished with 32 points and seven assists, while Mitchell scored 28 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Their production helped Indiana overcome 33 points from Seattle guard Natisha Hiedeman.

Boston had also been playing extremely well before suffering the injury. She scored 11 points during her brief appearance and was perfect from the field. Sophie Cunningham delivered another optimistic update during a halftime interview, saying she believed Boston was “going to be okay.”

That does not guarantee Boston will avoid missing time. The Fever will likely evaluate her again before determining whether she can play in their next game.

Boston’s status becomes Indiana’s biggest concern

Boston’s injury was particularly alarming because she has already dealt with a lingering lower-leg issue this season. She played only five minutes in the WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday, allowing her to receive additional rest before Indiana resumed its schedule.

The former No. 1 overall pick has developed into one of the league’s most reliable interior players and remains essential to everything the Fever want to accomplish. Her scoring, rebounding and ability to work with Clark in the pick-and-roll give Indiana a dimension that would be difficult to replace.

The Fever are scheduled to continue their road trip against the Portland Fire at Moda Center on Friday. Boston’s availability will likely depend on how her knee responds over the next several days. For now, White’s decision not to risk bringing Boston back and Cunningham’s optimistic assessment are positive signs. Indiana escaped Seattle with another victory, but getting its All-Star center healthy will matter far more than squeezing a few additional minutes out of her in July.
