Cleveland Browns Training Camp: Day 4 Recap

An off day awaits the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, but the intensity turned up a notch on Day 4 of training camp.

Day 4 Headlines

Quarterbacks

The common theme through the first three days of camp has been that the QB who was running with the twos has had the better day of practice, but that changed on Saturday. 

With Shedeur Sanders back with the first team, the offense finally found some success moving the ball on this defense; granted, it was missing Carson Schwesinger and at times Denzel Ward. 

Still, Sanders was effective during the second session of 11-on-11 work where he completed all five of his pass attempts, including an absolute dime to Denzel Boston on a fade route. 

Just before that, he had a strong red zone, 7-on-7 period where he tossed two touchdowns, one to Jerry Jeudy and one to Isaiah Bond. He followed it up with a shaky 11-on-11 red zone period, where he nearly threw and interception to Grant Delpit, who couldn't hang onto the easy pick. In the final session of practice, Sanders did throw his first interception of camp on a 50-50 shot to Jeudy down the sideline.

The highs outweighed the lows for him, though. 

Meanwhile, Watson's struggles continued, despite being with the twos. He tossed three interceptions in total on the day, although the first one wasn't entirely his fault after the ball deflected off of Jack Stoll's hands and was intercepted. 

He threw his second pick during the red zone 7-on-7 session on a pass that didn't have nearly enough air underneath it to get to Stoll in the corner of the end zone. His final one came on the final play of the day as he soured a ball over Tylan Wallace's head in the end zone in a hurry-up offense that was picked. 

It wasn't all bad for Watson. He scored three touchdowns in his red zone 11-on-11 session, but overall it was another uneven day for the veteran. 

Then there was Dillon Gabriel, who continued to produce some highlights against the threes. He had a few really nice passes throughout different phases of practice, including a big one to Cedric Tillman on a dig. He also had two touchdowns during red zone work, but an interception as well. 

Interceptions Galore

As mentioned, the defense continued its dominant start to camp by snagging five interceptions. Chris Edmonds had two of them alone, both off of Watson. Watson's third interception was snagged by safety Donovan McMillon during the red zone work. D'Angelo Ross made an acrobatic interception toward the end of practice, going up to steal a 50-50 fade ball from Jerry Jeudy. Gabriel's one pick came in the red zone as well, via linebacker Reid Carrico. 

Browns fans in attendance finally got treated to some exciting plays on Saturday between the nine touchdowns and the five interceptions thrown on Day 4. 

Getting Chippy

The third session of 11-on-11 work brought the Browns down into the red zone and after an incomplete pass on the first play for the ones, DT Sam Kamara got into it with tackle Tytus Howard. The rest of the team was quick to swarm them as a kerfuffle ensued.

It was the first bit of chippiness we've seen in four days of camp and with the pads going on come Monday, there could be more on the way. Either way there was definitely an uptick in intensity on Saturday. 

Nothing Matters

Todd Monken dropped a quote that all Browns fans should probably hear in regard to the quarterback competition. For context, the offense is currently going through installs that will take them through the first eight days of camp. With that in mind, Monken explained just how harshly they're evaluating the quarterbacks so far. 

"I'm not making a decision on any of them until we get through all the installs and we get to where, okay, the practices are the same. We're scripting it based on who's taking the reps. And we're playing the preseason games or we're going against the Bills. I'll take that back. We are evaluating, but not to that extreme. Nothing's going to be decided over these install practices. We're just getting it in, letting the guys compete, see where we're at. That's all positions. And then once we get further along in pads, the full installs are in, we get to compete against other people. That's really when I'm going to be able to see it."

In other words, nothing really matters right now. 

O-Line Roulette

Spencer Fano was back with the first team o-line on Saturday. The full group consisted of: 

Tytus Howard at RT, KT Leveston at RG, Elgton Jenkins at C, Zion Johnson at LG and Fano at LT 

There were at least a few times when Austin Barber got some run with the ones at right tackle. He was primarily with the twos, though. That group primarily consisted of: 

Barber at RT, Kendrick Green at RG, Parker Brailsford at C, Jack Conley at LG and Dawand Jones at LT

Injuries and Absences

Aside from DT Maliek Collins' continued absence on the PUP list, the other absences included Fellow DT Kalia Davis, who left Day 1 with an injury and hasn't practiced since. 

Schwesinger was in a jersey only and didn't practice, Saturday. Other absences included WR Jamari Thrash and G Teven Jenkins.  

Rookie TE Joe Royer remains away from the team for unknown personal reasons.

Play of the Day

This one's easy. Denzel Boston continues to light it up at camp and made maybe the catch of camp so far on a perfectly thrown 50-50 shot from Sanders down the sideline, going up to MOSS Tre Avery to come away with the catch. If he keeps this up, kids will be yelling "BOSTONED" when receivers make these plays in the future. 

Player of the Day

There's a theme here. It's Boston. The guy continues to catch everything thrown his way. His phenomenal spring has turned into a phenomenal summer. The streets of Cleveland are buzzing with Denzel Boston hype.

Honorable mention goes to Edmonds for snagging the two picks. 

Quote of the Day

Deshaun Watson was asked about the door potentially being open to remain in Cleveland if things play out right this season and wanted to dispel any narratives out there about his relationship with the city. 

When I first got here, there was a lot of stuff going on, as the world knows. But I don’t have any bad feelings toward Cleveland. I love Cleveland. Me and my wife have our house on the east side, so we’re here all the time. We were here this summer. If you ask around, I’m at pretty much all the restaurants, hanging out, so I haven’t had a bad experience outside of different times in the stadium. I don’t know why that narrative is out there that people think that I don’t like Cleveland. My family and I have been enjoying our time here, if the opportunity shows up, we’ll see where it goes.”

What's Next?

Sunday is the first day off for the Browns since camp commenced on Wednesday. They'll return to the field for the first day in full pads on Monday. It's also the first of six straight practices. That session is not open to the public.
