Kevin Feige Reveals Why Marvel Fought to Keep Sadie Sink's Role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day a Secret

Now that Spider-Man: Brand New Day has finally revealed Sadie Sink's mystery role, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has shared why the comic book movie company fought so hard to keep it a secret.

Sink plays… Jean Grey. Yes, fans, YouTube theorists, and just about everyone on the internet called it months ago, but that didn't stop Marvel Studios from playing its X-Men cards close to its chest for the new Tom Holland-led Spidey movie.
This version of comic book readers' treasured telepath was brought to the live-action world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to play Spider-Man: Brand New Day's villain. She controls the minds of random New Yorkers, MJ (Zendaya), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and the Punisher (Jon Bernthal), stops the city dead in its tracks, and tears apart the Department of Damage Control – but what was it all for?
Sink was cast in the movie all the way back in March 2025, with even reports at the time suggesting a part as Jean Grey was on the table. Marvel stayed tight-lipped regardless of all of the online chatter that followed, eventually going on to not only include a very quiet Sink in pre-release marketing but to start poking fun at the situation in the days leading up to the premiere.
After director Destin Daniel Cretton teased that Marvel had a "very real reason" to keep Sink's character's identity a secret, Feige finally broke his silence during a new interview with Variety. After more than a year of beating around the bush, his answer may leave you wanting more.
"It’s purely about creating the best possible opening weekend experience for the audience," Feige said.
According to him, it was all about the surprise. Marvel has, of course, kept major cameos and reveals a secret before, with Spider-Man: No Way Home being perhaps the most infamous example. When it comes to Sink as Jean Grey, though, the MCU puppeteer said there's a little more riding on what the X-Men character brings to the table than what she brought to just one movie.
"Sadie’s character is one that our fans know has immense significance within the Marvel Universe, and she plays a key role in the future of the MCU," he explained. "I’m just happy that the secret is finally out and that Sadie can stop dodging the question."
Sink hasn't had time to issue a public statement regarding her grand reveal, but that's probably because Spider-Man: Brand New Day is already tangling up headlines for other reasons. The new Spider-Man movie defied expectations by breaking records at the box office following its July 31 premiere. We're just now rounding out its fourth day in theaters, but after rounding up a whopping $930 million worldwide in its first weekend alone, it looks like $1 billion is just around the corner.
