Former Lawrence Central coach Tim Richey was named the new boys track and field coach at HSE, pending approval by the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Board of Trustees, the school announced on Tuesday.

Richey led the Bears’ girls team to state championships in 2010 and 2014. He also guided the boys squad to a state title in 2012.

“We are excited to welcome Tim Richey to Hamilton Southeastern and the Royals family,” HSE Athletic Director Drew Tower said in a press release. “Coach Richey’s track record of developing champions speaks for itself, but what impressed me most throughout this process was his passion for developing young people and his commitment to building a culture of excellence.

“He understands that sustained success is rooted in discipline, meaningful relationships, and the daily pursuit of improvement. We believe he is the right leader to elevate our boys track & field program while continuing to build on the proud tradition of Hamilton Southeastern Track & Field.”

Richey, who has spent over three decades in the sport, is a 2021 inductee of the Indiana Track & Field Hall of Fame. His coaching career has included time at White River Valley, Lawrence Central, Ball State University, the University of Indianapolis and Pike High School.

"The opportunity to bring this program, alongside the already successful girls program, to a level that is among the best in the Midwest every season is incredibly exciting,” Richey said. “We want to compete for conference and state championships year after year while representing a community that values excellence."

Richey will take over a Royals program previously led by Garrett Lawton.
