Teen elated as GoFundMe exceeds R2m: ‘Give and you will receive’

GOFUNDME CAMPAIGN SURPASSES R2 MILLION FOR TEEN WERNAND
In recent days, a GoFundMe campaign set up for young Wernand, seen in a BI Phakathi video, has exceeded R2 million.
The campaign has raised $128 200 (over R2 million) from donors around the world.
Wernand touched the hearts of the public after he was spotted gathering scrap metal and old tyres to sell to raise money to help his family. At the time, the 14-year-old lived in a dilapidated house with no walls or roof.
In an updated video, Wernand appeared to be living in a safer home, filled with food and groceries.
The overjoyed teen vowed to continue supporting his mother, baby sister, and all those living in destitution.
He said, “I don’t have the kind of heart to say no. I don’t know how to say no.
“Even if I have a R2 in my pocket….
Wernand added that his grandmother had instilled in him a life lesson to help the less fortunate.
He added, “If you give, you will receive”
WHO IS BI PHAKATHI?
Good Samaritans BI Phakathi and US philanthropist Logan Mayberry are credited for helping young Wernand secure food and a safe home via the GoFundMe account.
While Mayberry is widely known through his Reward The Kind charity endeavour, Phakathi has kept his identity a secret from ordinary South Africans.
Through his foundation, the Phakathi aims to “help people who need help in these difficult times”.
He says of himself: “The South African motivational speaker, filmmaker, and life coach BI Phakathi lends just a hand, without showing his face.
“BI has maintained his reputation as a mysterious giver to the underserved on the streets. In his videos, he helps the underprivileged and homeless people with resources. Bi believes in maintaining anonymity while adding value to society”.
