Training camp intensity in August is a tale as old as time, but the Cleveland Browns are experiencing it firsthand with two of their most important new additions. During Saturday’s sweltering padded practice, defensive end Jared Verse and rookie offensive tackle Spencer Fano engaged in a heated brawl that briefly stopped the session.

As the Browns wrapped up their sixth consecutive day of practice, tempers finally boiled over. Tensions flared when Fano openly taunted Verse after the veteran edge rusher jumped offsides during a one-on-one rep. The trash talk instantly ignited a physical altercation. Verse threw multiple punches before grabbing the rookie, wrestling him to the ground, and knocking his helmet off in the chaotic scrap. Teammates immediately rushed in to break up the two linemen before things escalated further.

Despite the violent scene, the coaching staff opted not to eject either player from the session. Both lined up for the very next play, where Fano responded by completely locking down Verse in pass protection, drawing a massive cheer from the fans in attendance.

The dustup caught many off guard given their recent dynamic. Earlier in the week, head coach Todd Monken openly praised Verse for taking the rookie under his wing. The veteran defender had been staying late after practice to help Fano refine his footwork and adjust to NFL speed.

Verse arrived in Cleveland earlier this offseason as the centerpiece of the blockbuster trade that sent Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams. He brings an aggressive edge to the defensive line, coming off a strong 2025 season where he recorded 7.5 sacks, 58 total tackles, and three forced fumbles. Meanwhile, Fano, the No. 9 overall pick out of Utah, is currently battling to lock down the starting left tackle job.

Fistfights are rarely the intended method for building team chemistry, but iron sharpens iron. If this intense exchange is any indicator, the Browns’ trenches will be battle-tested and ready for the regular season grind.
