Boston has celebrated championships from the Patriots, Celtics, Bruins and Red Sox throughout the last two decades. But according to former Red Sox player and current broadcaster Lou Merloni, one team still captures the city’s attention in a way the others cannot.

During an appearance on “Yahoo Sports Daily” on Monday, Merloni discussed Boston’s stunning in-season turnaround and the excitement surrounding the franchise’s return to playoff contention.
“It’s still a baseball town,” Merloni said. “There’s no team that captivates this city like a good, winning Red Sox team.”
It is a strong statement considering the success and popularity of Boston’s other professional teams. The Patriots became an NFL dynasty under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, the Celtics remain one of basketball’s signature franchises and the Bruins have an intensely loyal following.
Yet the atmosphere surrounding the Red Sox has changed dramatically as the team has climbed back into the American League playoff race.
Red Sox Have Brought Fenway Park Back to Life
The Red Sox enter Monday’s series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays with a 64-53 record. They sit third in the AL East and trail the New York Yankees by only 1 1/2 games for the top AL Wild Card position.
That seemed nearly impossible earlier in the season.

Boston was 10 games below .500 before beginning one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent franchise history. The Red Sox have won 27 of their last 32 games, including nine-game and 10-game winning streaks. They recently swept the Chicago White Sox while scoring 30 runs across three games. Before that, Boston swept the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
The Red Sox finally cooled off over the weekend, dropping two straight games and losing a series to the Athletics. That setback did little to erase the momentum they created over the previous month. Fenway Park once again feels like the center of Boston’s sports universe. Every game carries postseason implications, and the Red Sox have provided fans with a reason to believe their season could extend deep into October.
That is exactly the point Merloni was making. Boston supports all of its teams, but a competitive Red Sox club creates a different rhythm throughout the city. Baseball’s daily schedule allows the team to become part of nearly every summer conversation.
Boston’s Turnaround Came Despite Major Obstacles
The Red Sox did not take an easy path back into contention. Boston fired manager Alex Cora in April and promoted Chad Tracy on an interim basis. Tracy has since emerged as a legitimate AL Manager of the Year candidate after overseeing the team’s dramatic recovery.
The Red Sox also produced their extended winning surge without two of their most important players.
Garrett Crochet has not pitched since landing on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation in late April. Roman Anthony has been sidelined since early May with a partially torn tendon in his finger. Boston found ways to win without either star.
Willson Contreras leads the club with a .285 batting average, 23 home runs and 70 RBIs. The Red Sox also strengthened their roster before the trade deadline, acquiring All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles. Rutschman traveled with the team to Toronto and could make his Boston debut during the four-game series.

Red Sox Have a Chance to Prove Merloni Right
The challenge now is sustaining the excitement. Boston opens a four-game series against the Blue Jays before traveling to Pittsburgh for three games against the Pirates. The Red Sox have an opportunity to strengthen their Wild Card position and create more separation from Toronto, which enters Monday at 56-63.
A postseason berth is far from guaranteed. The Yankees remain ahead of Boston, while several other AL clubs continue to battle for the final Wild Card spots.
Still, the conversation surrounding the Red Sox has changed completely.
The season no longer feels like another missed opportunity. Boston has become one of baseball’s most compelling stories, and fans are responding accordingly.
Merloni played for the Red Sox across parts of nine seasons, so he understands the relationship between the franchise and the city. His declaration will invite debate from Patriots, Celtics and Bruins fans.
