The 116th South African Open – golf’s second-oldest Open – will return to the Cape winelands and Stellenbosch Golf Club from 4-7 March 2027 following the record 2026 success of a championship that generated almost R300 million for the local economy in a powerful partnership between the Sunshine Tour, DP World Tour and PGA Tour.

The championship continues to be a premier showcase of the global Strategic Alliance between the Sunshine Tour, DP World Tour and PGA Tour, and this partnership will take another bold step in 2027 with an increase of the prize fund to $2 million (R32.4 million).

This year’s tournament offered $1.5 million in prize money.

Offered exemptions

It was further elevated amongst the leading national Opens in golf when – for the first time in its history – it offered exemptions into the Open and the Masters in 2026.

Casey Jarvis’s victory earned him a place in these two iconic Majors, and the young star of South African golf achieved a career-high finish of tied sixth in the Open and is also on track to earning a PGA Tour card for next season.

“The success of the Investec South African Open is clear to see both inside and outside the ropes as our national Open continues to elevate its status on the global stage through the opportunity it creates for our professionals, the economic impact it has for the local community, and the value it delivers for the sponsors,” said Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour.

“Casey Jarvis was a perfect example of the pathway the championship offers through the Strategic Alliance we have with the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, and the support from The R&A, The Masters and GolfRSA. With his victory Casey qualified for and made his debut in both The Open and The Masters, launching a new phase of his career and delivering another international star for South African golf.

“Beyond this, the championship was a source of national pride as it generated almost R300 million in economic impact, provided roughly 400 jobs, and delivered a net sponsorship value of R1.1 billion. It reaffirmed that a Sunshine Tour tournament is remarkable value for a sponsor.”

Qualifying venues

The 2027 South African Open will also feature three new qualifying venues in Pretoria at Irene Country Club, Wingate Country Club and Waterkloof Golf Club.

For the first time there will also be a new Last Chance Qualifier in the Western Cape prior to the championship.
