A man and woman face extortion charges following an investigation into an alleged online dating scheme in Brampton.
Peel Regional Police say the alleged victim was contacted in July on a messaging platform by an individual using the name Manisha Sharma.
“After agreeing to meet in person in August, the victim attended a residential basement apartment near Torbram Rd. and Peter Roberston Blvd. in Brampton,” police alleged in a statement released Wednesday. “Shortly after, a male suspect entered the room, and the victim was allegedly threatened and extorted of $6,000 through e-transfer.”
Police have not revealed if the alleged victim is a man or a woman.
But following a “thorough investigation,” two suspects were subsequently identified.
Harwinder Singh, a 35-year-old man, and Riya Riya, a 23-year-old woman, both of Brampton, were arrested on Aug. 12.
They are each charged with two counts of forcible confinement, one count of robbery, and two counts of extortion.
Harwinder is also charged with uttering threats.
Both of the accused were held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Cops concerned about other alleged victims
Police said investigators are concerned about the possibility of other alleged victims and they are urging anyone who “experienced a similar incident under the pretext of a casual date to come forward.”
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact investigators at 905-453-2121, ext. 2133, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
