Akron Zips open 2026 men's soccer season with dominant win over Dayton

The nationally ranked University of Akron men's soccer team opened the 2026 season with a 3-0 win at home over the University of Dayton on Thursday, Aug. 20.

Freshman midfielder Londen Sears, junior forward Remi Agunbiade and senior midfielder Jack Sullivan scored goals for Akron, which is ranked No. 8 by Top Drawer Soccer preseason and No. 12 by the United Soccer Coaches Association.

Zips junior goalkeeper Brett Kaminski made two saves to record a shutout as 14th-year coach Jared Embick earned his 159th career win.

Agunbiade assisted on Sears' goal in the 11th minute and then scored an unassisted goal in the 17th minute. Sears assisted on Sullivan's goal in the 52nd minute.

Akron finished with an edge in shots (15-10), shots on goal (6-2) and corner kicks (8-2).

Kaminski and Zips defenders Nolan McGuire and Freddy Kossehasse played the full 90 minutes. Defender Matthew Paiva and midfielder Tyler Morck each started and played 81 minutes. Sam Bunch started defensively with McGuire, Kossehasse and Paiva.

The Zips will be back at FirstEnergy Stadium for their next two matches, hosting Army at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, and Wake Forest at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28.
