The Dallas Cowboys opted to rest Dak Prescott for their preseason matchup against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday, giving Joe Milton III the opportunity to take the first-team reps at quarterback. Milton made sure to capitalize on the chance, playing a good game that helped Dallas secure a 34-13 win while strengthening his case to become the team’s QB2 behind Prescott.
Milton finished the game completing 9 of 13 pass attempts for 179 yards and two touchdowns. He also added another touchdown with his legs. Two plays in particular stood out during his performance. Milton connected with Jonathan Mingo on a deep pass down the left sideline for a 53-yard touchdown, showcasing his arm strength and ability to attack defenses vertically.
Later, Milton rolled out to the left and delivered a pass to a wide-open Camden Brown, who turned it into a 70-yard gain and helped set up Milton’s rushing touchdown.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer praised Milton’s performance afterward.
"This game is about being able to control the RPMs of football with different speeds and touches,” Schottenheimer said. “And he's done that at a really high level."
Milton had already offered encouraging signs during Dallas’ first preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. Sam Howell handled the first half in that matchup before Milton took over after halftime, completing 12 of 15 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.
With Milton continuing to perform well, Schottenheimer and the Cowboys coaching staff now face an important decision regarding who will serve as Prescott’s backup.
Meanwhile, Milton is not allowing the competition for the QB2 position to distract him from his focus on improving his own game.
"That's out of my control," Milton said. "The only thing I'm able to do is go out there and call the play, and just make sure the offense is moving. Whatever they decide, they decide."
Through two preseason halves, Milton has accumulated 286 passing yards and four total touchdowns, including three through the air and one on the ground. His athleticism has given the Cowboys plenty to consider as they evaluate their quarterback depth heading into the regular season.
