‘His ego has taken so many hits’: Criticism mounts over Deshaun Watson’s self-confidence

After revealing that Deshaun Watson would be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns’ season on Monday, outrage has spread amongst the sports community. The 10-year veteran has not been in good graces since calling fans out for being “disrespectful” during a postgame interview relating to the booing he received during Saturday’s preseason game against Buffalo.
Watson has since apologized, calling his actions emotional and a part of human nature. But it may be too little, too late, as some believe the Browns QB’s ego is tainted.

Former NFL star and Fox Sports analyst Robert Griffin III addressed his concerns for Watson’s mental fortitude via X.
The Cleveland Browns should have named Shedeur Sanders their starting QB.

“Everybody in the world, no matter what they tell you, no matter what they tweet, they want to be liked. Um, people want to fit in, they want to be celebrated, they want to be cheered for, and as soon as what happened with Deshaun Watson off the field happened, he became public enemy number one. And I believe he is struggling to play football at the highest level because his ego has taken so many hits,” Griffin III said.
Watson has been involved in several off-field situations that tarnished his reputation, as well as his latest injury history.
“There are people in Cleveland that do not want Deshaun Watson on the Cleveland Browns for off-the-field reasons. There are people in Cleveland who hate Deshaun Watson for off-the-field reasons; there are also people in Cleveland who don’t want Deshaun Watson in Cleveland for on-the-field reasons, so he’s getting booed from both ends…It takes a toll on players when they know they don’t like me for on-field and off-field reasons. There is nothing that I can do to get them to like me, and it’s my fault that they don’t like me,” Griffin III added.
As the spotlight on Watson gets brighter, media and fans will heavily evaluate his performance come September.
