Illinois has a new star quarterback in East Carolina transfer Katin Houser. The offensive backfield is terrific, the ground game should be dominant, and the defense will be good with a little time, but that’s not what’s getting all the attention.
It’s a scoreboard. A very, very big scoreboard.
At well over 17,000 square feet and almost 70 feet high by 250 feet wide, Illinois is about to debut the biggest screen in all of college football. A rebuilt UAB team under Alex Mortensen will look to steal the show.

- Take out the strange 2020 season when teams weren’t quite right thanks to a global pandemic, and Illinois hasn’t lost a season opener since 2010 against Missouri.
- UAB hasn’t lost a season-opener since 2013 – but there were two years when it didn’t play football, and all but one of those wins were against FCS teams.
- Illinois gets ACC Champion Duke next, then a tune-up against Southern Illinois, and then the Big Ten season opens at Ohio State. This is UAB’s only game against a Power Four team – it gets ULM next.

Why UAB Will Win
Illinois might have a scoreboard, but UAB is unveiling a whole new defense with ten projected starters and almost all of the backups coming in from the transfer portal. New defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has several options to work with.
On the other side, quarterback Ryder Burton leads a passing game that will keep on hitting the midrange throws. The offense will move the ball.

Why Illinois Will Win
Yeah, about that UAB defense – it might be starting from scratch, but it has a long way to go to get off the ground. It wasn’t the worst defense in America last season, but it was close.
The Illini won’t mess around. Houser isn’t former Illini quarterback Luke Altmyer throwing the ball, but he’s a far better runner. The 1-2 rushing punch of Ca’Lil Valentine and Aidan Laughery will be terrific. Battering-ram runner Kaden Feagin is now a tight end who can carry the ball, and the line is loaded after hitting the portal hard.

Illinois vs UAB Prediction, Betting Lines
UAB brought in plenty of size for the defensive front, but it won’t be enough. Illinois will flirt with 300 rushing yards as it keeps the ball for close to 35 minutes. The rested defense will do its part in the second half, but UAB will put up a few early scores to keep things interesting.
The new scoreboard will take care of things when the game hits a lull.
