One of the biggest and most unusual stories to come out this week has been United States President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America amid an ongoing trade dispute with Canada. The move gave longtime NFL broadcaster Al Michaels an opportunity to poke fun at Trump during a preseason game broadcast, and it appears that some of Trump’s supporters were not amused.

According to a report from a prominent political analyst, Trump’s supporters are now threatening to “boycott” the NFL over Michaels’ remarks.

Michaels Takes a Shot at Trump

During Thursday night’s preseason matchup between the Cleveland Browns and the New England Patriots in Cleveland, Michaels took a not-so-subtle jab at Trump following a commercial break.

As the broadcast resumed after a commercial break, the camera showed a view of Lake Erie, which borders the city. Michaels used the moment to joke about Trump’s most recent antics.

“That is Lake Erie. We think it is still called Lake Erie. We’re not quite sure at this point,” Michaels said. “But we’ll be by Lake something like Ontario or whatever it’s going to be called by the time we get to Buffalo (for Week 1).”

“Anyway, you know what I’m talking about,” Michaels said with a laugh. “Some of you do. Read the news.”

Michaels was, of course, referencing Trump’s recent decision to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America through an executive order.

Trump Supporters Reportedly Threaten NFL ‘Boycott’

Although many viewers saw Michaels’ comments as nothing more than a harmless jab, some of the president’s supporters reportedly took issue with both Michaels and the NFL over the remarks.

Brian Allen, founder of the political news and commentary platform The Allen Analysis, claims that Trump’s supporters are now threatening to boycott the NFL because of Michaels’ comments.

“Trump supporters are threatening to boycott the NFL after Al Michaels mocked Trump’s renaming of Lake Ontario during a preseason broadcast,” Allen wrote in a post on X.

It’s worth mentioning that Allen did not provide examples of Trump supporters actually threatening to boycott the NFL, so it remains uncertain where these alleged threats originated, whether they were made on social media or through other means.

That said, this would hardly be the first occasion on which conservative Americans have threatened to boycott the league. This season actually marks the 10-year anniversary of Colin Kaepernick’s famous national anthem protests, which led to widespread backlash from conservatives across the country, many of whom said they would boycott the NFL at the time.

‘Miserable way to live’

“All of MAGA world is psychologically disturbed. They live their lives desperate for opportunities to be offended, aggrieved, outraged. Guy makes aside abt Trump silliness : boycott the NFL! They idolize a psycho narcissist. Hostility is their only joy. Miserable way to live,” wrote longtime New York Times reporter Bill Carter.

“What is especially striking about this is that Al Michaels is very much a right wing guy,” wrote Norman Ornstein, a noted political scientist, contributing editor for the Atlantic, contributor to The Contrarian, and cohost of the podcast Words Matter.

“Al Michaels is a well-known and longtime Republican but of course, even implied criticism of Dear Leader is not accepted within the cult,” wrote prominent sports commentator Scary Lawyerguy.

“How is that mocking? He just stated facts. With Trump, truth is a parody,” wrote former White House reporter Ron Fournier.

“They threaten to boycott the NFL on every day that ends in Y,” wrote broadcaster Jon Easter.
