Whenever teams in Major League Baseball make blockbuster trades like the Boston Red Sox did for Adley Rutschman, it always gets viewed in a different light.
The Red Sox have made some tough trades in recent years, with the Mookie Betts trade at the top of that list and heavily criticized.
This is very different from what the Red Sox did then, but they also gave up a lot to the Baltimore Orioles for Rutschman.
There was a lot of hope that Rutschman would come in and be a major contributor early on, but he's dealt with injuries and, unfortunately, hasn't played as well as hoped. While some are already calling this trade a failure, that's totally unfair, which is why it's awesome to hear Craig Breslow come out and shut down that chatter.
“We’ll be able to evaluate the trade in its totality probably five or six years from now, but the catching spot was an area where we felt like we needed to upgrade,” Breslow said, per Boston.com.
Breslow did the completely right thing here by making these comments, even if some fans want to be frustrated with everything that's gone on over the past month or so.
Ultimately, if the Red Sox win a World Series over the next few years and Rutschman is still on the roster, as he's set to hit the free-agent market after next year, nobody will ever view this trade as a failure.
It's best to give him some time to let him get back to doing what we all know he can, and that's being one of the best players in Major League Baseball.
