Mike Vrabel understands Christian Gonzalez’s position. He just refuses to let the star cornerback’s unresolved contract situation become a distraction for the New England Patriots. With New England preparing for a season-opening Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks, Gonzalez’s availability remains uncertain. The cornerback has not committed to playing without a new deal, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

Gonzalez previously described the negotiations as frustrating. Vrabel, however, declined to use the same characterization when speaking with reporters Saturday.
“I wouldn’t use the word frustrating,” Vrabel said, per Pro Football Talk.
That response should not be mistaken for a dismissal of Gonzalez’s concerns. Vrabel acknowledged the emotions involved and reiterated his desire to continue coaching Gonzalez both as a player and as a person. The Patriots coach simply does not believe frustration will help resolve the dispute or prepare New England for one of the NFL’s most dangerous receiving groups.
Vrabel also made it clear that he wants Gonzalez in New England for the long haul.
Mike Vrabel Makes Patriots’ Position On Gonzalez Clear
While Vrabel said he does not directly participate in contract negotiations, he indicated that Gonzalez belongs among the players the Patriots want to build around. That may have been the most meaningful part of Vrabel’s answer.
Coaches generally avoid making public declarations that could influence negotiations. Vrabel nevertheless left no ambiguity about Gonzalez’s standing inside the organization. The Patriots view the cornerback as a foundational player, and their coach wants to help bring the standoff to an end.
“I certainly want to be involved in trying to get the situation resolved,” Vrabel said.
That does not mean an agreement is imminent. Vrabel offered no timetable and repeatedly steered the conversation back toward Seattle. His message was that a deal will be complete when it is complete, leaving the football operation to prepare for every possible outcome.
That preparation becomes considerably more difficult if Gonzalez is unavailable.

Seattle features a challenging collection of playmakers, including Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Rashid Shaheed. Gonzalez gives the Patriots the type of coverage flexibility needed to challenge explosive receivers and create opportunities for Vrabel’s defense to pressure the quarterback.
Without him, New England could be forced to adjust its coverage assignments, safety deployment and pressure packages days before kickoff.
That is why Vrabel’s refusal to embrace the word “frustrating” matters. He recognizes the significance of the situation, but he does not intend to let uncertainty dictate the Patriots’ preparation.
Vrabel cannot personally negotiate Gonzalez’s extension. He can advocate for one of his most important players, communicate with everyone involved and keep his team focused on Seattle.
For now, that is the balance the Patriots coach is trying to strike. New England wants Gonzalez as part of its future, but its immediate challenge is preparing to play without knowing whether he will be part of its present.
