Why Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame can be best game of Week 1

The Wisconsin Badgers will have a lot of eyeballs on them in Week 1, as they’re taking on each other in primetime on Sunday evening, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. at Lambeau Field on NBC.

Now, the Badgers aren’t a part of the closest matchup on the slate. They’re currently 20.5-point underdogs against the Fighting Irish, according to FanDuel, and things don’t seem primed to change ahead of the game.
But does that mean they won’t deliver the most entertaining game in Week 1? Interestingly enough, one of our weekly Reacts polls has the Badgers as part of a top-five game of the week.
The top choice for game of the week in our national Reacts poll was Clemson vs. LSU. Unfortunately, LSU blew out Clemson 51-10, as Lane Kiffin’s debut in Baton Rouge went better than advertised.
Interestingly enough, Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame was the No.2 game on the docket. That shows some confidence that Wisconsin can at least keep things competitive on Sunday, riding the backbone of their defense.
When you look at the other games mentioned on the list, Louisville and Ole Miss play on Sunday evening. Boise State was stung by Oregon in round 1, 34-27, although they kept it competitive for the most part until a late Dante Moore touchdown pass.
SMU and Florida State actually play on Monday evening rather than on Sunday, giving them ample time to prepare, while accelerating the clock for Week 2.
Washington vs. Washington State are two very different teams, and only got two percent of the vote. They kick off tomorrow afternoon and will be a good test for the Huskies as they look to move forward.
Wisconsin’s game could very well be a blowout. But with what we’ve seen so far today in Week 1, there’s also room for a major upset, and the Badgers have the defense to potentially make things competitive on Sunday.
