Iowa State vs Iowa Prediction: Who Will Win the Cy-Hawk Trophy?
· Yahoo Sports
The always fun and intense Cy-Hawk rivalry takes a back seat to a horrific tragedy.
Derek Phillips, a member of the University of Iowa band, passed away after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest during the Hawkeyes’ win over Northern Illinois. Along with a moment of silence, the marching band will pay tribute to him at halftime.

We share our deepest thanks for the overwhelming support shown to our HMB family over the last few days. This Saturday, the HMB, @uiowa, and @TheIowaHawkeyes will honor Derek’s memory in several ways: pic.twitter.com/bAibuZlE2l

Why Iowa Will Win
Iowa State is still starting over.
The Cyclones might have been fine against an FCS school, but they’re starting ten transfers on offense, likely seven on defense, and they’re still working out the kinks, especially on the ground. They only managed 108 rushing yards against SEMO, didn’t control the clock at all, and … to be fair, they were up 28-7 at halftime.
The Iowa defensive front dominated the Northern Illinois line, getting into the backfield for six sacks and allowing just seven net rushing yards on 31 carries.
Why Iowa State Will Win
It’s Iowa State. Even with all the new players and coaches, it didn’t fill up on the appetizer with the main course still to come.
The offense wasn’t sharp enough for a full 60 minutes last week, but the pass rush was terrific, the effort was there, and former Arkansas State quarterback Jaylen Raynor pulled off several big plays with two touchdowns passing and two more on the ground.
Iowa State vs Iowa Prediction, Betting Lines
Iowa will control the clock and the tempo, but will that matter? It’s the battle for the Cy-Hawk Trophy – six of the last eight have been decided by a touchdown or less, and the other two were each decided by ten points.
The last blowout was a 42-3 Iowa win in Week 2 of 2016. This won’t be nearly as bad, but Iowa will get the downfield passes going just enough to open it up – it actually threw a bit against Northern Illinois – and the defense will take care of the rest.
