Red Sox place another outfielder on injured list, recall spark plug from Triple-A

BOSTON — A day after he had an MRI on his sore foot, Red Sox outfielder Eli White has landed on the injured list.

White was placed on the 10-day IL Friday with a ligament injury in his foot, according to the team, which recalled infielder Anthony Seigler from Triple-A Worcester. White hurt himself slamming into the grated fence/wall in center field Tuesday night and missed Wednesday’s game as he underwent tests. At this point, the Red Sox haven’t ruled out a potential return for White this season but the outfielder is in a boot and on crutches and appears unlikely to return with just 15 games to go.
“He’s got a ligament injury in the top of his foot. They’re actually still going through scans,” said interim manager Chad Tracy. “He saw our doctor again today and they’re sending him for more opinions with other doctors. They’re still working through exactly the severity of it.”
“The IL part was fairly obvious. Over the last couple days, he was in a lot of discomfort and it was pretty apparent he’s not going to be able to play for a bit.”
White, who was acquired from Atlanta at the trade deadline in an effort to give the Red Sox a veteran right-handed hitting backup outfielder with speed, had started six straight games in center field after starter Ceddanne Rafaela was placed on the IL with a quad strain last weekend. For now, the Sox will be down their top two options in center, though Rafaela is trending in the right direction and could be back in the lineup during next week’s road trip to Texas and Tampa Bay.
“I don’t think Tuesday’s in play,” Tracy said, referencing the first day Rafaela is eligible to be activated. “I think he’s getting close. Everything’s progressing nicely but the biggest thing with Rafa right now is making sure the strength numbers are in the appropriate spot before they really ramp up sprint exposure.
“He’s running right now, jogging but not high-intent running. Hitting, throwing, all of that is good. But until that strength number gets where they want it, that’s when they’ll ramp sprint exposure. Once he does that for two or three days, hopefully we’ll have him.”
On Friday against the Royals, Jarren Duran started in center for the first time since May 31 with Roman Anthony serving as the left fielder and Mickey Gasper at the designated hitter. With Rafaela and White both sidelined, Duran and Nate Eaton are the prime candidates to start in center. It appears Anthony — who has started just one game in left field since returning to the lineup on August 30 — will have an increased defensive role for the time being.
“Eaton can help us there, but it makes a lot of sense on certain days to slide Duran over and get Roman into left field,” Tracy said. “That’s what we’re doing today and against certain right-handed starters, that’s what makes sense.”
White has appeared in 27 games since the trade and has hit .276 with a homer, three doubles, 12 RBIs and a .679 OPS for the Red Sox while playing all three outfield positions. The Red Sox traded depth starter Tyler Uberstine to the Braves for White hours before the deadline on August 3.
Seigler returns to the Red Sox less than two weeks after being sent down when Boston activated both Anthony and Trevor Story from long IL stints. Seigler has appeared in 48 games this season, hitting .250 with three homers, 13 RBIs and a .737 OPS for Boston while mainly playing second base. He will assume a backup infield role behind Nick Sogard and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, the two primary options at second base, and could be sent back down when Willson Contreras is activated from the IL, perhaps as soon as Sunday.
