The New York Yankees are inching closer and closer to clinching a spot in the 2026 MLB postseason, and on Sunday, they ended their three-game weekend series against the New York Mets in excellent fashion — shutting them out 2-0 behind another incredible outing from starting pitcher Cam Schlittler.

After the game, Aaron Boone held his customary press conference, although it looks like the wear and tear of the season has caught up to the longtime Yankees manager. Boone showed up to the press conference with a noticeable limp, and this caught the eye of a few media members, including New York Post’s Joel Sherman.

As per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Sherman then joked around with Boone, saying that the last time the now-Yankees manager had an injury, New York responded by trading for Alex Rodriguez to replace him at third base. Boone then joked that it’s still “too soon” for Sherman to have made that joke.

As one would recall, Boone suffered an injury prior to the start of the 2004 MLB season — tearing his ACL. With a void at third base, the Yankees then pulled off a blockbuster trade for Rodriguez in February 2004. The Yankees later released Boone as he recovered from injury.

This would end up paying off for the Yankees in a big way. While they would suffer an embarrassing choke job in the 2004 ALCS, with the Boston Red Sox coming all the way back from a 3-0 deficit, they would end up winning the World Series in 2009 — with Rodriguez being an elite fixture for the team at third base.

Boone, meanwhile, wouldn’t have too many productive years after he tore his ACL. He did play in the big leagues until 2009, but he was close to replacement level for the final five seasons of his career.

At the very least, he’ll always be a postseason hero for the Yankees, as he hit the walk-off home run against the Red Sox in Game 7 of the ALCS, sending them to the World Series.
