Boston Red Sox’ Garrett Crochet Continues to Build Towards Return

As the Boston Red Sox prepare to open a three-game series in Texas against the Rangers, all eyes are on Fenway Park, where 2025 American League Cy Young Award runner-up Garrett Crochet threw another bullpen session as he pushes toward a postseason return from the injured list.
According to Tim Healey of the Boston Globe, interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters in Arlington that Crochet threw a 30-pitch bullpen on Tuesday afternoon, his heaviest workload to date.

The bullpen session marks the fourth time Crochet has taken the mound since restarting his throwing progression on Aug. 3. Prior to Tuesday afternoon’s session, his most recent outing came ahead of Friday’s loss to the Kansas City Royals, where the 27-year-old ace threw about 25 pitches on the Fenway mound at 80-90 percent intensity, including introducing his sweeper for the first time.
As noted by Healey, Crochet will now have a couple of days of rest before the team determines the next steps, but it remains unlikely that Crochet will join Triple-A Worcester for a rehab assignment prior to their season ending on Sunday.

He appeared to be nearing a return, throwing a one-inning simulated game on May 26, before a LAT strain kept him from throwing until Aug. 3. Before landing on the injured list, Crochet struggled on the mound, posting a 6.30 ERA in 30 innings pitched.
As a result of the injury, Crochet has spent more than 120 days on the injured list, triggering a contract clause that converts his 2031 player option into a guaranteed year. In addition to the extra guaranteed season, Boston also gained a club option for the 2032 season for $ 15 million.
Crochet is hoping to return to the Red Sox in a relief role for their postseason run.

Slaten finishes his season with a 4.60 ERA in 31.1 innings of work. Slaten first landed on the injured list on Aug. 16 with right elbow soreness.
According to Cotillo, second baseman Curtis Mead is set to begin a swing progression on Wednesday with “light” tee work. Mead landed on the injured list on July 28 with a broken wrist after being hit by a pitch in his second plate appearance in a Red Sox uniform.
