LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — After a week-one overtime victory over the New Orleans Saints, the Detroit Lions (1-0) will face the Buffalo Bills (1-0) at their new stadium in Orchard Park, New York, today, Sept. 17, at 8:15 p.m.

The two teams will christen Buffalo's new Highmark Stadium on Thursday, marking the Bills' first home game of the regular season and their first game in the new $2.1 billion stadium, built in May 2023. The stadium has a capacity of 60,108, 10,000 fewer than the Bills' previous home. Some fans are scrutinizing the new stadium for obstructed views and its small video screens.
The game is expected to feature high-powered offenses and defenses battling to hold up.
The Lions narrowly defeated the Saints 31-30 in Detroit last week. New Orleans rallied from a 21-0 deficit and pulled into a 24-24 tie on a touchdown pass from quarterback Tyler Shough to tight end Juwan Johnson with 1:07 left in the game.
Detroit went three-and-out on the following drive, giving the Saints the ball with a chance to win it, but Ryan Wright missed a 62-yard field goal as time expired. In overtime, the Lions marched down the field and punched it in after quarterback Jared Goff threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
The Saints extended the game in overtime after Shough threw a touchdown pass to tight end Noah Fant.
After coach Kellen Moore chose to go for the win instead of tying the game with time on the clock, Shough threw an incomplete pass in the end zone on a 2-point attempt.
Goff finished by completing 26 of 39 passes for 206 yards with two touchdown passes without turning it over.
Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs finished the game with a career-high 29 carries for 156 yards and two touchdowns, along with five catches for 30 yards.
Buffalo edged out a 36-31 win over the Houston Texans in the first week, thanks to a 34-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Allen to wide receiver Joshua Palmer with less than 2 minutes left on the clock.
Allen nearly lost the game for the Bills on the previous play after Houston’s Kamari Lassiter dropped an interception in the end zone. He finished with 334 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. He also scored two rushing touchdowns.
Both defenses let up gaudy yardage and scoring numbers in week one. Despite a strong start — shutting out the Saints for nearly three and a half quarters — Shough still threw for 410 yards and three touchdowns. 182 of those passing yards were provided by wide receiver Chris Olave. The Saints also put up 91 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.
The Bills' defense may not have collapsed like the Lions', but they still ended up in a shootout. Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud threw for 274 passing yards and two touchdowns. Former Lions running back David Montgomery led the way for the team's rushing attack, putting up 60 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. The Texans finished the game with 124 rushing yards.
In years past, the Lions-Bills matchup has been an exciting game to watch. In 2024, the Bills narrowly defeated the Lions 48-42. The last 7 matchups, dating back to 2002, have been decided by a single score. The Lions last defeated the Bills on Nov. 10, 2006. The Lions have played the Bills 13 times, with Detroit winning four games and Buffalo winning 8. The two teams tied 21-21 in their first matchup in 1972.
