On Wednesday, LSU listed Sam Leavitt as "doubtful" for Saturday night's game against the Rebels despite there not being any prior indication that he was injured. The 21-year-old has gotten off to a slower start for LSU despite the team's two blowout wins, but he is still one of the most important players of the team.

Even though Leavitt is on the injury report, it's very possible that he still plays this weekend and that this was all part of Lane Kiffin's gamesmanship for the contest. Everything LSU does this week will be scrutinized with the spotlight shining brightly on the program.

Will Sam Leavitt play vs. Ole Miss?

LSU has Leavitt listed as "doubtful" for Saturday's game against Ole Miss with an undisclosed injury. The designation was unexpected, since Leavitt finished last week's game healthy and there was no indication that he had a notable injury of any kind during or after the game.

Leavitt threw 38 passes in LSU's 45-14 win over Lousiana Tech last week, producing 344 passing yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. The Tigers took him out midway through the fourth quarter when the game was in hand. On3's Pete Nakos reports Leavitt has been limited in practice with a sore shoulder.

However, there does seem to be some skepticism about how injured Leavitt truly is, as many believe that Lane Kiffin is trying to mess with his former team. Leavitt is the lone player listed at "doubtful" throughout the SEC this week, and Kiffin apparently has a history of having players who were listed as "doubtful" end up playing in the game that week.

Two seasons ago, the SEC began requiring injury reports from each team, similar to what happens in the NFL, as a way to be more transparent with media and the fans. The SEC describes players listed as doubtful as "unlikely to play/25 percent chance to play," leaving the window open that Leavitt could still play in the game without LSU breaching the injury report rules. If LSU is found to have misled Leavitt's status one way or another, the SEC is eligible to fine them anywhere between $25,000 and $100,000.

LSU has three quarterbacks on its depth chart, all of whom are capable of producing if the Tigers need them to.

Leavitt earned the starting job immediately upon transferring to Baton Rouge from Arizona Stats. The junior was the Sun Devils' starting quarterback in 2024 and 2025, but he dealt with injuries last year that limited him to just seven games during the season.

Behind Leavitt are two other quarterbacks who both have varying degrees of starting experience. Landen Clark spent the previous two seasons at Elon University, playing in 12 games for the Phoenix in 2025 and totaling 29 combined touchdowns. In LSU's first two games, Clark was the first quarterback off the bench when Leavitt took a seat in each blowout.

The other quarterback is Husan Longstreet, who was a higher-profile quarterback transfer coming over from USC. Longstreet played in just four for the TRojans last year, attempting just 15 passes overall as the primary backup to Jayden Maiava. However, Longstreet is considered the higher-upside option to Clark.

If Leavitt is forced to miss the game, LSU could reasonably start either Clark or Longstreet in the game.
