Willson Contreras never stopped believing in the Boston Red Sox.
After Boston clinched a spot in the 2026 MLB postseason Sunday, the veteran first baseman reflected on the team's journey and made it clear how proud he is of the clubhouse.
"I did believe in my team," Contreras said in an interview. "I did believe in everybody who was here. I never had a doubt that we can turn the season around."
Contreras recalled sending a message to his teammates during Boston's struggles.
“I just said, ‘Keep believing in ourselves,’” Contreras said, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. “I said, ‘Believe.’ That was our main word. And that's what we believed from Day 1.”
The Red Sox eventually turned their season around, but Contreras credited the entire clubhouse for continuing to work through adversity.

“We created a good family here, good chemistry throughout the season,” Contreras said. “We just needed time and the time came for us.”
Contreras also pointed to the injuries and other challenges Boston faced throughout the season.
“We played through injuries, we played through mental stuff, physical stuff but we never stop believing in each other and that's why we're here,” he said.
Contreras joined the Red Sox from the St. Louis Cardinals last offseason and quickly became an important voice in the clubhouse.
Following Sunday's clinching celebration, he addressed his teammates and made sure they knew how much he appreciated the group.
“I’m really thankful, first of all, for playing for Boston,” Contreras said. “Thankful for the front office for asking me to come here and all of the good human beings that are here on this team.”
For Contreras, reaching the postseason is an accomplishment worth celebrating, but he views it as only the beginning.
“This is just the first step ahead,” Contreras said. “I just wanted to let everybody know that I’m proud of every one of you.”
