What’s next for Rangers after Adam Sykora ruled out 4-5 months with injury

It didn’t look good when Adam Sykora got hurt Monday in preseason action, and Wednesday the New York Rangers confirmed that the injury update is definitely not good news.
Sykora is out 4-5 months with a lower-body injury.

The 22-year-old forward sustained the injury after taking a hit from New Jersey Devils prospect Mikael Diotte in the first period of New York’s 3-2 loss. Diotte, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound defenseman, slammedhard into Sykora, with his elbow catching the Rangers forward in the jaw. As Sykora recoiled and fell to the oce, his leg bent awkwardly behind him.

Sykora needed aid to leave the ice and headed straight to the Rangers dressing room in obvious pain. He was ruled out for the rest of the game, and no update was provided until Wednesday before practice in Westchester.
It’s a blow to the Rangers forward depth since Sykora proved late last season capable of playing in the NHL. He was a sparkplug down the stretch, and a quick fan favorite, with his high-energy style, easy smile, and three goals in 11 games.
Though he wasn’t expected to crack the opening-night roster after the Rangers made a series of offseason moves to bolster the forward position, Sykora was a solid option for recall from Hartford of the American Hockey League should there be a a need for a competent replacement.
The Rangers received better news about defenseman Vincent Iorio, who also sustained a lower-body injury against the Devils. The 23-year-old is day to day.
