49ers injury report: 8 sit out Wednesday

The San Francisco 49ers opened their practice week Wednesday for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals and released their first injury report of Week 3.
Defensive tackle C.J. West was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a knee injury, the ninth 49ers player to be placed on the list since the cut to 53 on Aug. 30. They are getting thin at the position

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said, “Anytime you have five D-tackles make a team and you're down to two of them after two games, that's always a concern for anybody. We were able to sign one new guy (Naquan Jones from the Vikings practice squad) and then we’ve got three guys on practice squad (Isaac Alarcon, Kevin Givens and Sebastian Valdez) that will be competing to see who's up. We’ve got guys there in this building, so we’ve got to see how those guys step it up.”

Signed as an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, Evans played 75 percent of the snaps (49) in Week 1 and caught six passes for 49 yards and a touchdown. Last Sunday against the Dolphins, he suffered a hip injury and was limited to three receptions for 54 yards and 28 snaps (54 percent). The 49ers signed wide receiver Brandin Cooks to the practice squad.
