A month ago, I discussed why A.J. Brown was vastly overvalued, and why if he got hurt, Drake Maye's value would suffer. After all, he would be throwing to one of the lowest-tier receiving corps in the league. At what point should fantasy managers throw in the towel?

Yes, Maye’s poor play has exacerbated what is already a challenging situation. There might also be a little light at the end of this fantasy tunnel. Recent reports suggest Brown could return in two or three weeks. That would coincide with the softest part of the Patriots’ schedule. That would be a best-case scenario for managers seeking to sell high on Maye. The team faces the Raiders at home in Week 5, followed by the Jets at home in Week 6. The next two games will be against the Bears and Dolphins.
If Brown has a setback or simply isn’t ready to return until November, then Maye would have his work cut out for him, albeit against a softer collection of opponents than he’s faced so far. Either way, Maye’s value seems to have nowhere to go but up.
But holding onto him too long could backfire because, starting in Week 14, the Patriots will face the Vikings, Chiefs, Jets, and Broncos. That’s not an ideal late-season schedule, even with Brown.
Finding the sweet spot is key. There’s no reason to sell low now. Wait for the schedule to ease up and for Brown to return. Then you might be able to secure top-12 or even top-10 value. It’s either that, or wallow in misery that you burned a fifth-round pick on a guy who looks like a backup.
