Mike Vrabel has coached long enough to know that a struggling quarterback needs more than another reminder about his mistakes.

On Wednesday, the Patriots head coach revealed that one of his messages to Drake Maye came from a familiar story about overcoming an imposing opponent.

David and Goliath.

New England is trying to recover from a 35-6 loss to Jacksonville that dropped the Patriots to 1-2. Maye’s turnovers have become a major concern, and the next assignment is a road game against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.

Vrabel’s point was that difficult stretches are part of becoming the player, and the team, the Patriots want to be.

“He didn’t hand him a crown, right? He gave him a fight,” Vrabel said Wednesday, explaining the story he had shared with Maye.

Vrabel Gives Maye A Different Way To View Adversity

Vrabel framed the biblical reference as a story he appreciated, regardless of someone’s religious beliefs. The lesson was about working through obstacles. He acknowledged that the Patriots’ journey would include setbacks alongside the moments when everything goes their way.

For Maye, that message arrives during a particularly difficult opening month. The third-year quarterback has thrown six interceptions against one touchdown through three games. He has completed 63.8% of his passes for 585 yards, a sharp departure from the production that helped make him an NFL MVP finalist last season.

Vrabel also described his role in helping Maye command the offense. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels handles the play-calling connection, while the head coach emphasized urgency, leadership and getting teammates to believe in their execution.

That is an important distinction for a quarterback trying to regain his footing. Maye has to make better decisions while continuing to lead the players around him. Losing confidence in either responsibility would make the recovery harder.

Maye Backs His Coach As Buffalo Test Approaches

Maye offered his own support for Vrabel on Wednesday as both addressed a radio report suggesting tension between them. The quarterback praised his coach and made clear that his enthusiasm for playing for him remained intact.

“I love playing for him, that’s not going to change,” Maye said in his Wednesday media availability.

There also was a health question to address. Maye appeared on Wednesday’s injury report with a right shoulder injury but participated fully in practice. Asked whether the shoulder was affecting his throwing, he said it was not.

The Patriots need that reassurance to translate into cleaner football. Support from the head coach matters, but protecting possessions and finishing drives will determine whether New England can change the direction of its season.

Sunday offers a demanding opportunity to do that.

Vrabel’s message gives Maye something to carry into the preparation: The difficult part of the journey still can lead somewhere worthwhile.
