Bengaluru Division Celebrated Gandhi Jayanti and Swachh Bharat Diwas

Bengaluru Division of South Western Railway observed Gandhi Jayanti at KSR Bengaluru Railway Station today, 2nd October 2026. The occasion also marked the observance of Swachh Bharat Diwas, as part of the culmination of the fortnight-long Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign and the ongoing Swachhata Pakhwada 2026 campaign. Swachhata Pakhwada 2026 commenced on 1st October and will continue across the Division till 15th October.

On the occasion, Ashutosh Kumar Singh, Divisional Railway Manager, Bengaluru, along with officers and staff, paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. The DRM administered the Swachhata Pledge to the gathering, reaffirming the commitment towards maintaining cleanliness and sustaining efforts for a cleaner and greener environment.

Speaking on the occasion, Ashutosh Kumar Singh highlighted the importance of cleanliness and recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s emphasis on cleanliness as an essential part of daily life. He appealed to passengers and the public to maintain cleanliness at railway stations and other public places.

He also urged passengers to follow four-stream segregation of solid waste at source and dispose of waste in the designated green, blue, red and black bins. He called upon the public to avoid single-use plastic and adopt the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Later, he distributed cloth bags to passengers and encouraged them to adopt eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastic.

As part of the campaign, the DRM inaugurated a selfie point and signature campaign at the station. Through the signature campaign, officers and staff affirmed their commitment to maintaining cleanliness in railway stations and trains and ensuring segregation of waste into four distinct streams as per the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.

A street play by Arunodaya Kala Thanda and a Nukkad Natak by Railway Scouts and Guides were also organised to spread awareness among passengers about cleanliness, waste segregation and responsible waste management.

On the occasion, Safai Mitras were felicitated in recognition of their contribution towards maintaining cleanliness in railway premises.

Later, sapling plantation and mass Shramdaan were organised at the station premises, with active participation from officers and staff.

A ‘Segregation Express’ created by EnHM staff using discarded waste materials collected from the station premises was exhibited at the station concourse, showcasing the theme of four-stream segregation of solid waste at source.

Parikshit Mohanpuria and Praveen Kataraki, Additional Divisional Railway Managers; Azimuddin, Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer, Freight and Environment & Housekeeping; and other officers and staff were present on the occasion.
