The Dolphins signed Carlos Washington Jr. from the practice squad to the one remaining spot on the active roster Saturday ahead of Sunday’s 4:05 p.m. kickoff against the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Washington had been competing with fellow practice squad tailback Jarquez Hunter for the call up to be the No. 3 running back behind Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon II with Achane’s season over due to his knee injury suffered last week against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“They’ve had good weeks,” coach Jeff Hafley said Friday. “I think they feel an opportunity is close and they’re doing everything in their power to seize that. I know the competition has brought out the best in them, and at some point, we’ll need them both.”

Washington could presumably see action Sunday along with Wright and Gordon. On Thursday, offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik alluded to seeing a “few faces” in the backfield.

The coaching staff sees a similar skill set in Washington and Hunter.

“They both fit the scheme,” Hafley said. “They’re both good backs who can carry the ball. They’ve got good straight line speed. They run hard. They can be in there on third down in protection, so they don’t have to come off the field there. They both have some size to them, and they can both catch the ball out of the backfield. So, I think they’re similar.”

The Dolphins also elevated defensive tackle Mazi Smith and edge rusher Rodney McGraw on Saturday.

Miami needed another defensive tackle after sending Keith Cooper Jr. back down to the practice squad. The only three at the position on the active roster before Saturday were Zach Sieler, Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers, as Kenneth Grant still has another week before he’s eligible to return off injured reserve.

McGraw helps an edge group that will be without Rob Beal Jr., who was ruled out Friday with a hamstring injury.
