How Benedictine football coach Danny Britt notched 200th career win

Danny Britt is known for his emotional style of coaching on the sidelines with his Benedictine football team ― but that passionate approach is usually in the form of getting after his players or an official, who throws a flag he has an issue with.

But on Friday, Oct. 2, Britt got a little choked up after his Cadets rolled to a 48-10 win over visiting Evans at Memorial Stadium. It was the 200th career victory for the veteran coach, who was lauded by Benedictine athletic director Jack Holland on the field after Britt spoke to his squad.

Britt said his players and his coaching staff have been the key to his success and stopped for a moment when mentioning offensive coordinator AJ DeFillipis and defensive coordinator Galen Houston, longtime assistants who have been by his side through four Cadet state titles in his 16 years at the helm. Britt said they are like family to him.

Benedictine improved to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in Region 1-5A play with the win over Evans, which bumped Britt's career record to 200-60. He has a 168-38 record in 16 seasons at BC and posted a 32-22 mark in five years at Calvary Day.

"It's been a long time to get to 200 and we've put a lot of work into it," Britt said after the game. "I'm super proud of the coaches that have been with me so long. Most of the wins came here at Benedictine, it's been a great run."

Britt said it was hard to rank his victories, especially with the state championships the Cadets won in 2014, 2016, 2022 and 2023.

"If I had to break it down, it was probably that first state championship we won," Britt said of the 45-21 win over Greater Atlanta Christian in the Georgia Dome in 2014. "We had worked so hard for the four years leading up to it, and to see it end with a state title was pretty cool."

The Cadets dominated from the start against Evans.

Stanley Smart Jr., the senior running back committed to Virginia Tech, got things started with a 12-yard scoring run and ran for 93 yards on 11 carries on the night.

"Playing for Coach Britt has been a blessing," said Smart, who has rushed for 774 yards and seven touchdowns this year. "He's an intense coach on the sideline, but he also knows when to chill out. He knows the game so well and it's easy to learn from him. He's a great coach and a great man and I admire him."

Quarterback Omari Burse showed off his running ability all night. His first run was a 6-yard touchdown and Burse showed a burst of speed and great field vision on a 48-yard scoring jaunt midway through the second quarter. He finished with 100 yards rushing and the two scores on five carries.

Eron Mallard, the Cadets star receiver who has committed to Purdue, was sidelined with an injury, but junior Don'Trey Ford came in and had a breakthrough game.

Ford broke loose for a 90-yard scoring run down the left sideline at the end of the first half and caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Burse with 1:19 left in the third quarter that put BC up 34-10.

Ford rushed for a career-high 154 yards and the score on seven carries.

Demari Perry scored his first career touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter when the sophomore had a 48-yard pick six.

Benedictine, which entered the game ranked No. 4 among Class 5A teams in the state by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, is set to host cross-town rival Jenkins on Friday, Oct. 9, at Memorial Stadium.
