India beat Pakistan to retain gold medal at Asian Games 2026

India successfully defended their Asian Games cricket title on Saturday, beating Pakistan by 19 runs in the gold medal match at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin. Abhishek Sharma smashed 61 off 28 balls and Tilak Varma finished unbeaten on 51 from just 22 deliveries as India posted 211/6

In the end it remained a total that proved just out of Pakistan's reach despite a spirited chase. Pakistan's response was built around Hasan Nawaz, whose explosive 96 off 51 balls kept the game alive deep into the chase, but India's bowlers held their nerve at the death to restrict them to 192/8 and seal the win.

The result capped a dominant campaign for India, who reached the final after a commanding 124-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second semifinal, a match in which Ishan Kishan's unbeaten 80 off 46 balls anchored a total of 169/7 before the bowlers dismissed the opposition for just 45.

Pakistan, whose squad was considerably different from their regular senior T20I group, had reached the final by chasing down 111 against Bangladesh in 11.3 overs in a rain-shortened semifinal. It marked their first appearance in a men's Asian Games cricket final, while India added another gold to a finals record against Pakistan that now tilts even further in their favour.

India vs Pakistan in tournament finals: Matches, wins, losses and results

India and Pakistan have now met in five finals of significance, and India have won four of them.

Two of those finals belong to official ICC senior men's world events, and the split there is one win each.

The 1985 World Championship of Cricket was an invitation event run by the Australian Cricket Board to mark 150 years of European settlement in Victoria, the 2025 Asia Cup was organised by the Asian Cricket Council, and the 2026 Asian Games cricket tournament falls under the umbrella of the Olympic Council of Asia.

India vs Pakistan: Complete match-by-match results in all tournament finals

While India dominate overall World Cup head-to-head meetings, Pakistan built a historical lead in title deciders during multi-nation tournaments in Sharjah and subcontinental tri-series in the 1980s and 1990s.

India are the more dominant side in high-pressure matches

The overall finals record still shows Pakistan's historical lead from the Sharjah era, but a closer look confirms that India remain the stronger side whenever the pressure is highest and the tournament carries global or continental significance.

Pakistan built most of their lead at Sharjah and in subcontinental tri-series during the 1980s and 1990s, whereas in ICC and Olympic-affiliated events, which are a truer test of temperament, India have now won four of their last five meetings with Pakistan in finals.

The two sides have met in only two official ICC finals, and the one-win-each split hides how differently the games unfolded. India held their nerve to win the 2007 World Twenty20 final by five runs in Johannesburg, a match decided in the final over.

Whereas Pakistan's 180-run victory at The Oval in 2017 was emphatic, it stands as a single result against a long run of Indian success in global and continental competitions.

India's composure has also been visible more recently, as they won the 2025 Asia Cup final in Dubai by five wickets, with Tilak Varma's unbeaten 69 anchoring the chase, before doing it again at the Asian Games, where the same player's unbeaten 51 helped post a total Pakistan could not quite chase down despite Hasan Nawaz's lone hand.

Winning tight games on big occasions is a habit, not a coincidence, and India's gold medal in Nisshin only adds to a finals record against Pakistan that now firmly favours the men in blue.
