Bill Belichick found a silver lining after North Carolina Tar Heels 37-26 loss to No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday. But the future Hall of Fame coach still has work to do for the Tar Heels to turn a corner.

"We were certainly competitive, we missed some opportunities," Belichick said. "We just need to do a better job of coaching and playing, take advantage of those opportunities. They're a good team; it's not like anything was easy today."

That assessment summed up a game in which the Tar Heels repeatedly tried to pull the game closer, but couldn't manage to make it happen. North Carolina trailed 21-7 late in the second quarter before a goal-line stand stopped Notre Dame from extending its lead.

UNC then drove for a touchdown before halftime, and Jaden Jefferson opened the third quarter with a spectacular 98-yard kickoff return to cut the deficit to 21-20.

But Notre Dame answered immediately, proving why they're a favorite to make this year's College Football Playoff.

The Fighting Irish rushing attack took over, producing 122 yards on the ground in the third quarter alone. A 17-play, 75-yard drive lasting more than nine minutes ended with Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr scoring on a fourth-down keeper. He finished with 234 passing yards and four touchdown passes while adding another score on the ground.

UNC quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. threw three touchdown passes in a losing effort.

“The passing game’s really about team execution,” Belichick said. “It's not just the quarterback.”

For the Tar Heels, the effort was there, and you can tell this was one of their better performances of the Belichick era. However, the result was still a loss.
