“Not good enough” – Scholes tell Man Utd to find an upgrade on best INEOS signing

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes the club should bring in a better goalkeeper than Senne Lammens.

The Premier League giants might be coming off a vastly disappointing summer transfer campaign, with the club failing to address several issues.

On the contrary, the summer of 2025 was widely acclaimed as the club’s best transfer campaign in years after revamping their attack with the additions of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko.

And yet, Lammens, who only cost the club £20 million, was named the best signing of the Premier League season.

Last term, the Belgian goalkeeper was solid between the sticks, presenting himself as an instant update on Andre Onana.

Many felt that the 24-year-old was the answer to the club’s long-standing goalkeeping woes. However, a shaky start to the new campaign has raised some question marks.

Lammens was particularly chastised for his role in Lisandro Martinez’s comical own goal against Fulham before the international break.

Therefore, Scholes suggests Man Utd shouldn’t only reconstruct their backline in 2027, but also find themselves a better goalkeeper.

“We’ve had that backline for five years. We’ve not been good enough for five years, so it’s not going to be any better now,” argued the iconic midfielder during his latest appearance on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.

“Definitely, a new back four is needed. Maybe a goalkeeper.”

After enjoying a splendid first season at Old Trafford, Lammens may have set the bar too high for himself. Nevertheless, it should be remembered that the Belgian is only 24, a relatively young age for a goalkeeper.

Moreover, the chaotic defending and poor team displays certainly haven’t helped the shot-stopper’s cause.

On the other hand, Lammens has been solid on international duty, pulling off a superb display in Belgium’s win over Turkiye.

Therefore, United must continue to back the Zottegem native, as a few blunders shouldn’t be enough to write him off
