The San Jose Sharks announced on Monday that Macklin Celebrini had an injury and would not play against the Dallas Stars. Celebrini, the team’s new captain and their best player, is said to have a lower-body injury. Without him on the ice, San Jose was not able to secure a win.
It was a big night for Stars captain Jamie Benn, who scored two points. Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger wasn’t challenged much at all. When he was, he turned aside all 13 shots he faced. The Stars won 5-0 on Monday night.
The Sharks are not looking to use Celebrini’s injury as an excuse, however. “I get it is our captain and the biggest piece to the puzzle. But got to bring more than that,” forward Ty Dellandrea said, via San Jose Hockey Now reporter Sheng Peng.

San Jose fell behind early on when defenseman Miro Heiskanen scored his second of the season in the first period. Dallas then went on to take over in the middle frame. They scored three goals in the second period to put the game out of reach entering the third. Mikko Rantanen added a fifth for Dallas in the third.
The Sharks entered this game having won both of their first two games. Celebrini played a role in this, as well. He has not scored a goal to this point in the year. However, he does have five points through the first two games of the 2026-27 campaign.
San Jose certainly hopes its captain can return to the ice soon. In any event, they will look to bounce back on Thursday when they take on the St. Louis Blues on the road.
