The school announced Wednesday that Altman, 68, will step down after building one of the most successful eras in Oregon basketball history. Altman took over Oregon's program in 2010 and retires with a 382-269 record with the Ducks.

Before last season's 12-20 campaign, Oregon had won at least 20 games in each of his first 15 seasons. Under his leadership, the Ducks reached the NCAA tournament nine times, including a historic run to the Final Four in 2017. Oregon also advanced to the Sweet 16 five times and won at least one NCAA tournament game in each of its nine appearances.

Altman's success extended beyond the NCAA tournament. He guided Oregon to four Pac-12 regular-season championships and four Pac-12 tournament titles, establishing the Ducks as a consistent force in college basketball.

Across 37 seasons as a Division I head coach, Altman finished with a 792-425 record, ranking 15th in NCAA history in career victories. Before arriving at Oregon, he coached at Marshal, Kansas State and Creighton, where he made seven NCAA tournament appearances. He also led Kansas State to the tournament once.

In announcing his retirement, Altman described the decision as difficult but said he believes it is the right time to step away. He thanked his coaches, players and Oregon fans, calling coaching the Ducks "the honor of my life."

Ducks assistant coach Tony Stubblefield will serve as Oregon's interim head coach for the 2026-27 season. He spent 13 seasons on Altman's staff and previously served as DePaul's head coach from 2021 to 2024. Athletic director Rob Mullens said Stubblefield understands the program and has earned the trust of its players.

Oregon will open its exhibition schedule against Seattle on Oct. 15 before beginning the regular season against Montana on Nov. 2. The athletic department will conduct a national search for Altman's permanent successor.
