Seahawks Land Hometown Solution After Former 2-Time Pro Bowler’s Deal Collapses
· Yahoo Sports
The Seattle Seahawks desperately needed help after placing rookie Jadarian Price on injured reserve and with Zach Charbonnet still on the PUP list recovering from an ACL injury. They were trying to sign veteran running back Joe Mixon, but the plan fell apart on Tuesday.
So, the front office decided against adding the two-time Pro Bowler to their practice squad after he failed his physical. Instead of Mixon, they ended up signing Seattle native Dontae McMillan to fill the empty spot. McMillan is an undrafted rookie who grew up playing at Chief Sealth High School and spent training camp with the Baltimore Ravens earlier this year.

Seahawks sign Dontae McMillan after Joe Mixon deal falls through
The team’s backfield crisis escalated quickly over the past two weeks. Rookie running back Price suffered an ankle injury during the second quarter of the Week 2 win over the New England Patriots. The situation grew desperate on Sunday when Charbonnet exited late in the fourth quarter against the Miami Dolphins with a hamstring setback.

Coach Mike Macdonald confirmed the emergency search for depth on Monday. “We’re down runners,” Macdonald said. “We need running backs. He’s a good running back.”

On paper, Mixon easily has the best resume for the job. Since the Bengals drafted him in the second round back in 2017, he has racked up 7,428 rushing yards, 2,448 receiving yards, and 74 total regular-season touchdowns.
He made the Pro Bowl in 2024 after putting up 1,016 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns for the Texans. But after a severe foot injury wiped out his entire 2025 season, his contract ran out and he has been a free agent ever since.
Once Mixon failed his physical, the Seahawks landed their hometown option. McMillan was an absolute star at Chief Sealth High School, where he exploded for 2,019 rushing yards and 44 touchdowns during his senior year.
He then built on that success across six college seasons between Weber State and Eastern Michigan. He put up 801 yards at Weber State in 2022 before transferring to Eastern Michigan, where he took home team MVP honors last season after a dominant 1,014-yard performance.
McMillan signed to the practice squad Tuesday and replaced Wright, who went on the practice squad injured list, CBS Sports reports. Field Gulls reports he is the only running back on that unit. Seattle also signed running back Robert Henry Jr. off the Washington Commanders’ practice squad.
